Regina aside for the moment (sorry Queen Queen!), can we just look at this shot right quick and notice the blatant wardrobe mirroring/cohesiveness of this group?
I mean, SERIOUSLY.
Women in soft, blue material, men in black leather jackets. Both women have dark outer layers, both men have black shirts and pants.
Costume design is an extremely deliberate and important part of visual storytelling. It must provide strong visual support of the story, concept and context of what’s happening.
Having the couples mirror each other here presents them as a cohesive unit…or you know…A FAMILY.
What really gets me is Charming’s seeming adoption of Hook’s look. I mean, you cannot convince me that Charming’s hasn’t gotten floofier as his friendship with Hook has deepened. I will not hear it. All of this not only speaks to his acceptance of the pirate, but to that he admires and respects him enough to mimic his style.
On the flipside, Hook may not be mirroring Charming’s wardrobe style, but his evolution this season back to a hero and man of honor shows that he’s instead beginning to mirror Charming’s personality style.
(brb, need to go curl into my Captain Charming Feels Fetal Position™ real quick)
Finally, it’s interesting that Regina, in an episode where she sported blue in other story scenes she was in (killer blue dress in the opening scene with Zelena and later in the woods with Robin), that she is then sans blue here. She instead is in a light neutral color, which contrasts her with the couples.
This tells me that even though she is firmly part of the Royal Conclave, she isn’t quite part of the Royal Family yet.
TL;DR: HEY EVERYONE. LOOK HOW CUTE AND MATCHING WE ALL ARE.
